Welcome to Sorters Mill Elementary!

Sorters Mill has been part of my story since the day our doors first opened. I began here as a classroom teacher. I later served as an RTI specialist before becoming an administrator. Now I have the honor of leading the school that helped shape both my career and my family.
My own children began at SME as kindergarten students in our Dual Language program. Today, both attend Texas A&M University. One has followed a calling into education while the other is pursuing engineering. Watching their paths unfold has shown me how the foundation built in elementary school can shape a child’s confidence, purpose, and future.

At Sorters Mill, we believe every child is capable of more than they may realize. That is why we challenge our students. We want them to think deeply and keep going when learning feels difficult. We want them to leave us believing in themselves and prepared to take on whatever comes next.

Our staff makes that possible. They know their students and believe in them fiercely. They bring skill and heart into their classrooms every day. They celebrate growth while continuing to raise the bar. Most importantly, they never lose sight of the child behind the data.

SME is a place where students are known and encouraged to discover their strengths. They learn that success comes through hard work and the support of people who refuse to give up on them.

I am proud to lead a school that stands for high expectations and strong relationships. We are Four Houses, One Family. Together, we are growing deep roots and creating limitless possibilities for every child.

Assistant Principal, Elementary

Welcome to Sorters Mill Elementary!

What an honor it is to serve as the assistant principal in my hometown.  I am a 1991 graduate of New Caney High School.   I graduated with my Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M -Kingsville in 1995 and Lamar University with my M.Ed. in administration in 2017.

My passion for serving others led me to administration in New Caney ISD.  I am excited to share in the journey with the Tigers at SME.  The staff and students are some of the best I have ever worked with.  I am beyond thankful and blessed to have the opportunity to spend each and every day working with our prideful students, outstanding educators and supportive parents.

Assistant Principal, Elementary

Hola Tigers, I’m Sonia Martin Velicias, and I bring more than 12 years of experience in education along with a deep passion for helping students succeed. I’m originally from Spain, where I began my career as a kindergarten and elementary teacher.  In 2017, I moved to Texas as a Visiting International Teacher, and since then I’ve served as a bilingual teacher, instructional coach,  and most recently as an assistant principal. Every role I’ve had has strengthened my belief in student-centered learning and the power of strong school–family partnerships.

I hold two bachelor’s degrees in education, a master’s in educational research, and I’m currently pursuing my doctorate in leadership at Texas Woman’s University. My goal every day is to create a school environment where every student feels valued, supported, and encouraged to reach their full potential. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Sean, and volunteering in the community. I’m excited to be part of the Tiger family and look forward to working together to make this year a great one!
